Game over: Dodgers win, 7-2

Dodgers picked on a carousel of Giants pitchers to win, 7-2 in Los Angeles. Game 5 is a go for Thursday night in San Francisco. It'll be Julio Urías vs. Logan Webb. Both these teams have won 109 games this year. They will have baseball's stage all to themselves. Boogity, this series is hot.

After eight full innings: Giants 2, Dodgers 7

Brandon Crawford led off the top half of the inning with a double, went to third on a ground out by Buster Posey and scored on a ground out by Kris Bryant. Curt Casali, the last player on the Giants' bench, came into the game to pinch hit — and promptly struck out looking. An earned run for Blake Treinen, but nothing more. He will give way to Kenley Jansen in the ninth.

In the bottom of the inning, Will Smith homered off Jake McGee, driving in Corey Seager, to plate two insurance runs for the Dodgers. They are three outs away from forcing a Game 5.

Fabian Ardaya, Dodgers beat writer: Seager, Trea Turner and Smith all swung first pitch against McGee. All were squared up. The problem of relying on one pitch if you're McGee is you become predictable if you're not right.

Nick Groke, Rockies beat writer: Smith turned on a McGee fastball for a two-run homer in the eighth inning and the Dodgers, with a 7-2 lead, are three outs from Game 5. Phil Bickford is on for Los Angeles with a comfortable lead, some wavy flow and a chill vibe.

Will Smith hits a 2-run home run

Will Smith gives the Dodgers some breathing room. He's swinging as good a bat as anyone this series. 7-2, Dodgers B8.

Bottom of the seventh: Giants 1, Dodgers 5

A three-K seventh inning from Zack Littell did wonders for the Giants. He's now through two full innings just when Gabe Kapler was about to have to get weird. They're still in a pitching pickle going forward, but at least the bullpen churn slowed down some. It is almost impressive that the Giants are still within one swing in this game (there'd need to be three walks before that one swing, but meh). Dodgers are up 5-1 going to the eighth.

Top of the seventh: Giants 1, Dodgers 5

Alex Vesia gets Mike Yastrzemski to fly out and pinch-hitter Donovan Solano to pop out, but then he gives up a single to Austin Slater, who replaced Tommy La Stella. Dave Roberts calls on Blake Treinen to face Darin Ruf, and Ruf strikes out swinging.

Fabian Ardaya, Dodgers beat writer: Roberts said pregame he would be comfortable with Treinen or Kenley Jansen getting a second "up" tonight to keep their season alive. Wouldn't be surprised to see Treinen out there to start the eighth, perhaps with Jansen or Corey Knebel warming behind him.

After six complete innings: Giants 1, Dodgers 5

Kris Bryant singled off Brudsar Graterol, but he was the only Giant to get on base in the top of the inning.

The Dodgers had something cooking in the bottom half with Giants reliever Zack Littell on the mound. But with two men on, Cody Bellinger grounded out and San Francisco escaped without giving up a run.

Fabian Ardaya, Dodgers beat writer: Dave Roberts started Gavin Lux and took a gamble on the defense to get some offense. In response, Lux has reached base all four times tonight.

Andrew Baggarly, Giants beat writer: Gabe Kapler has tried like hell to keep the lid on a boiling pot, but his relievers just aren't throwing enough strikes. They only have Jake McGee and Camilo Doval left (and Kevin Gausman?) in the bullpen, and if Littell hadn't gotten out of that jam in the 6th, you got the sense no rescue was coming.

Brusdar Graterol throwing gas

Brusdar Graterol can certainly chuck it. He twice hit 102.5 mph in the top of the sixth inning, the fastest he's thrown a baseball in the major leagues. He's been more effective as of late, in part due to a cutter he picked up over the course of the year that can keep hitters honest and miss a few more bats.

Bottom of the fifth: Giants 1, Dodgers 5

Mookie Betts drove in another run with a sacrifice fly. Dodgers are up 5-1 now after five innings. But more pressingly, a Giants bullpen update: Gabe Kapler has used five relievers in less than four innings, more than half his bullpen. Camilo Doval is available still, but he pitched two innings last night. Jake McGee is out there. Zack Littell, too. Otherwise, we're talking about starters. Kevin Gausman could throw? Logan Webb? Alex Wood pitched last night. And, uh, somebody might have to, uh, you know, ahem, pitch in Game 5.

Top of the fifth: Giants 1, Dodgers 4

Walker Buehler's fifth inning: single, strikeout, walk, and then he was gone. Reliever Joe Kelly gave up a single to Tommy La Stella, loading the bases, then Darin Ruf hit a grounder to second that was fielded by Trea Turner. Ruf was out at first, but a run scored, getting the Giants on the board. Brandon Crawford, the next batter, grounded out, stranding two runners.

Fabian Ardaya, Dodgers beat writer: This is a much deeper Dodgers bullpen than years past, which is partly what gave Dave Roberts the confidence to go get Buehler on short rest when he did. Kelly came in and got three ground balls and navigated traffic while maintaining a three-run lead. I'd expect Roberts to stay aggressive — he already had Blake Treinen warming there in case things went haywire for Kelly.

Nick Groke, Rockies beat writer: The gates are open. Wide enough that the Giants walked through, too. They bounced Buehler and loaded the bases in the fifth. And Ruf traded an out for a run. But Crawford grounded out to Justin Turner to end the inning. So, lots of threat and a little to show for it. But the Giants are alive.

Walker Buehler exits after 4 1/3 innings

Mapping out the Dodgers' optimal scenario this game would've gone: score early, and get what you can from Walker Buehler in ~70 pitches. He went 71 pitches, did his job and exits with a four-run lead.

Bottom of the fourth: Giants 0, Dodgers 4

Mookie Betts provides two more runs for the Dodgers, who chase yet another Giants pitcher. Dominic Leone enters for San Francisco and strikes out Trea Turner, gives up a double to Will Smith, then gets Justin Turner to fly out.

Nick Groke, Rockies beat writer: The gates are open now. Walker Buehler dinged a hit off the pitcher that was ruled an error, then Betts tagged a two-run homer to right field. And the Dodgers opened up a 4-0 lead after four. Buehler cruised through four on two hits and a walk. And now he has some room to breathe.

Andrew Baggarly, Giants beat writer: If it's hope you need, Bay Area baseball fans, the Giants have 43 comeback wins this season and they've erased a deficit of as large as seven runs (the Yaz grand slam game). The Dodgers bullpen is not the Diamondbacks bullpen, however.

Mookie Betts hits a 2-run home run

The home run to right-center field means the Dodgers have a 4-0 lead with only one out in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Fabian Ardaya, Dodgers beat writer: Mookie Betts hasn't been at his best this season, but he's still Mookie Betts. Big swing to open this game up a bit.

So far, so good for Walker Buehler — in four innings he's thrown 60 pitches, 37 for strikes. He walked Kris Bryant but retired the other three batters he saw in the frame.

More on the Dodgers threat in the third inning

Andrew Baggarly, Giants beat writer: Chris Taylor has made two outs that traveled a combined 715 feet, and somehow, the Giants haven't gotten boat raced yet.

Nick Groke, Rockies beat writer: Oh, smokes. Bases loaded, two outs in the third. Taylor cranked a long drive off a low-and-in Jarlín García fastball in the third. Ball had grand slam written on it. But LaMonte Wade Jr. sprinted it down at the wall in left and the Giants weaseled out. Dodgers still up, 2-0.

After three complete innings: Giants 0, Dodgers 2

Walker Buehler made quick work of the Giants in the top of the third, retiring the three batters he saw with relative ease.

In the bottom of the inning, Kervin Castro gets the first batter, Trea Turner, to ground out, but surrenders back-to-back walks and gets the hook. Jarlín García walks his first batter, Gavin Lux, loading the bases, but Cody Bellinger grounds into a force out at the plate and Chris Taylor hits another long ball to left that's caught by LaMonte Wade Jr. The Dodgers don't score.

Andrew Baggarly, Giants beat writer: The Giants have recorded seven outs and they're on their fourth pitcher. Gabe Kapler has clearly decided to throw everything at this game to keep it within reach, and then figure out the rest later.

Fabian Ardaya, Dodgers beat writer: This is the "Aggressive Gabe Kapler" postseason game I was anticipating entering this series.

The Dodgers loaded the bases for Bellinger and left the former MVP in. He's got an OPS of just .383 against lefties this season. It would be aggressive to pull him this early with a lead, but this is the exact situation you have Albert Pujols on the roster for. Instead, Bellinger grounds out. Taylor nearly made that irrelevant, but Wade Jr. continues to be one of the best acquisitions in baseball this year.

An early exit for Anthony DeSclafani

An early exit for Anthony DeSclafani

Andrew Baggarly, Giants beat writer: Anthony DeSclafani was wild in the strike zone, which is not gonna work against this Dodgers lineup. He got five outs and one of them was a sac fly to the warning track. It's basically a bullpen game against Walker Buehler now, and at least the Giants already won one of those matchups Sept. 5 to take over first place to stay in the NL West. Lefty Jarlín García can go multiple innings. So can rookie Kervin Castro. While Gabe Kapler said using Game 2 starter Kevin Gausman on short rest "isn't the first place we'd go," it's certainly on the table. Mostly, though, the Giants offense needs a big inning.

Nick Groke, Rockies beat writer: The Giants are suddenly living on the edge after Kapler gave DeSclafani the hook in the second inning. Now it's a bullpen game. The danger is that the Giants burn through their arms, then have to turn around for a Game 5 with a short 'pen. The Giants did win the aforementioned bullpen game against the Dodgers, but Gausman saved them the next day by throwing seven strong innings and giving their relief corps some much needed rest. Of course, they can avoid all that risk by just winning tonight. Despite an early bouncing, Dodgers are up just 2-0 after two.
